Even the most beautiful location doesn't help much if the timing is wrong, rainy season, hurricane season, or oppressive heat can quickly turn a wedding abroad into a logistical challenge. Here's an overview of the key factors.
What matters when choosing your travel window
- Dry and rainy seasons (especially relevant in tropical regions)
- Hurricane and cyclone season (Caribbean, Indian Ocean)
- Peak season vs. off-season (prices, availability, crowds)
- Local holidays that can further strain venues and vendors
Caribbean and Central America (e.g. Mexico)
The dry season here roughly runs from November to April, after which hurricane season begins, extending into November. For safer planning, aim for February through April, warm, dry, stable weather.
Indian Ocean (e.g. Seychelles)
The so-called inter-monsoon period is considered ideal here, usually October/November and April/May. In these transition phases between the two monsoon winds, the sea is especially calm, the light clear, and the humidity bearable.
Southern Africa (e.g. South Africa)
The Cape region sits in the southern hemisphere, so the seasons are reversed. Summer there, roughly December through February, brings long, warm days and stable weather, ideal for an outdoor ceremony.
Southern Europe (e.g. Portugal)
Early summer, roughly May through June, is often the loveliest time: warm enough for an outdoor ceremony, but still ahead of the touristy peak-summer rush of July and August.
